Well, as we wrap up this year, I hope this note finds you happy, healthy, and enjoying the last few days of 2018. Despite troubling times nationally and internationally, it has been another amazing, wonderful year for me, with opportunities to see and do fun stuff in fabulous places with fantastic friends! Of the 5,000+ pictures that I took, I selected about a couple dozen of my very favorites to share with you.
A very quick recap: The year began with an amazing outpouring of support from friends (meals, companionship, transportation, medical care, you name it; they provided it) at home in Lancaster as I was recovering from surgery on my broken leg. Even before I was fully recovered, friends from Seattle insisted that I stick with our plan to rent a sailboat and cruise in the British Virgin Islands, despite my still hobbling around in a cast, with crutches. What a great way to recover!
After I regained my mobility, the road trips began: A month of paddling rivers in Florida, six weeks of wild and scenic rivers in Oregon, six weeks of hiking, biking, and kayaking in the Canadian Rockies, three weeks of multiday trips by canoe and kayak in Ontario's Georgian Bay and Algonquin Park, and then a couple of months of mostly hiking, motorcycling, and kayak sailing in Arizona!
Along the way I met up with old and new friends who joined me for various parts of these adventures: Jan, Linda, and Mary Anne in the BVIs, about 2 dozen paddlers from the Harrisburg Canoe Club who met up in Florida, Vern, Judie, Keith, Donna, Sam, Whit, Laura, Dee, Larry, and Virginia in Oregon, Marcia, Ron, Julie, Maureen, Mark, Martha, Maryna, Daryna, and Gigi in the Rockies, Rick, Wilma, Chris, Vern, and Phil in Ontario, and Jenny, Harry, Jopie, Gigi, Barbara, Tom, and Mario in Arizona. There were also a few trips to Ontario to spend time with a pretty big, pretty great extended family up there.
There is also my "family of friends" back home in Pennsylvania, especially singers and/or paddlers Marcia, Sue, Brad, Paul, Sheryl, Neil, Marybeth, Mark, Kate, Chris, Vern, Phil, Dave, Floss and Rich. Thank you, one and all, for helping to make this such a wonderful year!
